XPS L502x Freezing completely during gameplay.

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's GTA: San andreas, or Age of Conan after an hour or so my computer will completely freeze up, video, audio, everything.

I do notice if I have cursor control when I move the mouse it will jump but that's about it. Windows button doesn't do anything, alt+tab doesn't do anything, not even ctrl+alt+del helps. The only thing that remedies the situation is holding down the power button until it shuts off, and of course I know how great that is for computers. I just rebuilt it yesterday because I thought the problem might be overheating but it still freezes. Any help?

Hi gcustoms,

All games in General and Age of Conan in particular need good graphics capability. Sometimes faulty graphics card drivers can cause the games to lag or freeze. As a first troubleshooting step I would recommend uninstalling and then re-installing the Video Drivers in the computer and check. If the issue persists, try to uninstall and then re-install the game.

Do reply with results.

Hi gcustoms,

As mentioned earlier “Age of Conan” requires higher graphics capability, is the computer freezing during this game only or during normal operations?

It appeared to be fixed, for about a day. Now it's back to completely locking up, I fear my INTEGRATED graphics card might be dying.

During gameplay and gameplay only. Does not seem to matter which game, and with your advise in mind I had turned the graphics right down. I am getting great FPS and seems to have no reason to crash but sure enough it's still doing it.

I mean NO reason, like 60-75 fps all the time.

I wasn't quite sure on the instructions, Nvidia detected aoc as a game. But should I be selecting Use Global settings (Nvidia GPU)

High Performance Nvidia Processor

or Integrated graphics?

And why is it that I could run the game for over a year with no problem but suddenly this?

Hi gcustoms,

As recommended earlier did you uninstall and re-install the video drivers? If not, please update the drivers from our support site.

The Dell XPS L502X is equipped with nVidia’s Optimus technology. The Optimus technology is designed to maximize performance and user experience on the computer, while minimizing the impact on battery life. It combines the graphic processing capability of the integrated Intel graphic processing unit (GPU) with the discrete nVidia GPU while running graphic-intensive applications such as 3-D games. The nVidia GPU is turned on only for preset applications and thus extends the battery life.

The Optimus solution is enabled through an application profile. When an application is launched, the video drivers check to see if the application has an application profile associated with it.

If an application profile exists, the nVidia GPU is turned on and the application runs in performance mode. The nVidia GPU is turned off automatically when the application is closed.

If an application profile does not exist, the integrated Intel GPU is used.

The default list of application profiles is updated frequently by nVidia and is automatically downloaded to the computer when it is connected to the internet. No user interaction is required.

If you have already updated the drivers follow the steps below to create “Custom Application Profiles” for the games:

  1. Open the “NVIDIA Control Panel”.
  2. Select “Manage 3D Settings”.
  3. Select “Program Settings” tab
  4. Click “Add” button.
  5. Browse to and select the game that needs the new profile.
  6. Or choose the preferred game from the drop menu.
  7. Select the features and settings you wish to change for this game.
  8. This is a onetime selection and the settings will revert to the default application profile, the next time the application is launched.

After you have assigned “Custom Application Profiles” for the games, as stated above the games will operate on nVidia GPU instead of integrated Intel GPU.

Do reply with results.

Hi gcustoms,

I am sorry I was not clear in my previous response; ensure the option “High Performance Nvidia Processor” is selected for the game(s). Please see the image for details:

Hope this helps.

Hi gcustoms,

Outdated Video Drivers sometimes cause video problem. I would like to know if you have updated the latest Nvidia drivers and Intel Drivers from our support site. If you updated the drivers and still the problem exists, please try to download and update the drivers from the support sites of Nvidia and Intel. Click here to download the Intel Drivers and for Nvidia drivers click here.

Do reply with results.

No change, this will be reported to the better business bureau since dell has clearly sold me a piece of trash, and I asked my brother who has the same computer, and got it at the same time and he's having the same problems which started at the same time. THANK YOU DELL FOR PROVING ONCE AGAIN MONEY IS BETTER SPENT ELSEWHERE
