battery was not recognized, not compatible. Plugged in, not charging

Okay here's a long story :

- Laptop's motherboard replaced, got new battery and AC adapter

- turns out Dell gave me the wrong motherboard, I had an intel i5 and the new mobo was i3

(since this service was done 1 day before me moving permanently from Chicago to New Delhi, there was no way to fix this, stuck with the i3)

- after new mobo, everything was fine except the battery.  dies. Message in the battery icon was "plugged in, charging 0% available" a couple days ago

-left it alone for 2 days and now whenever i boot up i get a battery was not recognized, not compatible, and would not be charged by the system message. Message on the battery icon is "plugged in and not charging

-If I unplug AC power the battery dies.

. I really do not think its a problem with the actual battery although its still a possibility. It could also be drivers. are there drivers specific to a mobo i should be installing ?

I already tried

- disabling and uninstalling ACPI, although when i scan for hardware changes it appears like it never uninstalled. it just pops right back.

- taking out battery and power supply. shutting down. pressing power button for 30 seconds. plug everything back in and reboot.

-same thing as above but reboot with only power supply, and putting in the battery later

I'm pretty terrible with computers. PLEASE HELP.

Hi Swain49,

I am sorry about the issue you are facing, please follow the below steps which may fix the issue:

1. Please check the jack on the AC Adapter for any damage.

2. Have you tried with a good known AC Adapter?

3. Look for a green light on the A/C adapter or a blue light on the connector that connects to the computer.

If still the issue persists, restart the computer and the moment it starts start tapping the F2 key to boot the computer to BIOS  where you would be able to find AC Adapter Type under : Main Menu”., Let me know the status (None, Unknown or Shows the power).

Press F9 to reset the BIOS to factory default

You can also refer to the link for AC Adapter and Battery issue:

You can refer the Dell Article 266440 on Dell`s support site.

Hello, I am having a similar battery issue.  Battery meter says "22% available (plugged in, not charging)".  I have tried 3 good chargers and all of them say the same thing on the battery meter. Thanks.

Hi Headejm,

Please click on the link below for a Dell video on the "Plugged in, Not Charging" issue.

http://dell.to/197BEbZ

Additionally, you can click on the link below for AC Adapter Not Powering on the Computer or Charging the Battery issues:

http://dell.to/GXOyAb

In order to resolve this issue, you may need to update the BIOS on your computer. BIOS update is available on Dell Support website.

Click on this Youtube link for a video on how to update your Dell PC's BIOS in 99 Seconds:  http://dell.to/1fGmlNu

Follow instructions mentioned below prior to the BIOS update.

  • Ensure that the AC Adapter is connected to the computer prior to the BIOS update.
  • Disconnect any third party peripherals connected to the computer before performing BIOS update.
  • Remove any cd/dvd from the optical drive prior to the BIOS update.
  • Do not turn off the computer during the BIOS update.
  • Do not restart the computer during the BIOS update.
  • Ensure battery charge is more than 10% during BIOS update.

Note: Plug your computer to a good, working wall jack before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to replace the BIOS chip or motherboard.

Please keep us posted on the results.

Thanks & regards,
Babita S

Hey there,

I got the same trouble " Plugged in and not charging" 3 days ago.

I verified that the ac adaptor is good. boot menu showed the power is 150W.

I also uninstall the adaptor  and battery and keep pushing the power button for 40 secs.

Then reinstall everything. It's still the same.

It's Alienware M14 r2, just one month later than the one-year warranty. I dont think it could be the battery dead.

Thanks,

Ruijun
