setup new laptop to use Dell 720 printer?

Simply install the drivers and connect it.

Do I need to download software first? and where do I get the drivers and or software??

Yes, you do need to install the printer software BEFORE you connect the printer.

Go to start, control panel, system.

There it should tell you if you have Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit, unless you know.

Use the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit

Use the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit

Remember to install the drivers in the compatibility mode.

Rick, I dont know which Vist drivers to download. 32 or 64 bit?  I got that far.

It's been posted that this printer is not Windows 8 compatible, but other members tried this and got it to work...

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 8 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 8 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Remember virus program and firewalls will block communications. If you did not install any virus program, then Windows Defender is the default virus program. Try reading, Allow Printer past Microsoft Essentials/Windows Defender
