E5470 overheating
Hi All,
I have a E5470 that overheats when under heavy load and shuts down. The laptop is about 5 years old. This issue has become increasingly common. It used to happen once in a while but not happens every time the system is under heavy load. The fan speeds up as expected but after a couple of minutes, the system overheats and shuts down. I have cleaned the fan and the exhaust vents but that did not help. I have temporarily solved the problem by editing the power plan and setting the maximum process state to 85%. The speed decrease is not really noticeable, however, I would like to resolve the issue.
The fan is working and the speed does change depending on load but I don't think it is blowing as much air as it used to. Do fans blow less air as they get older? Would replacing the fan help?
Thanks in advance for your assistance
Gary

Did you run some stress test monitoring temperature?
I'll try to uninstall Intel software as you said, and run some tests.
Thank you @CFS-BC

Add me to this growing list. I let Dell Command Update install all critical and recommended updates, including the latest BIOS. The updates did not complete and after that I got the same graceful shutdowns that others are reporting. Eventually I was able to get the rest of the updates installed, but the machine continued to shut down.
A Web search brought the suggestion that I uninstall Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework. As far as I'm concerned that solved the problem.
So that leaves the question as to whether the machine really was overheating and the Intel application was simply doing its job of shutting the machine down when it got too hot. Is this a bad solution? I would rather not lose performance, but if the machine overheats and damages the hardware that wouldn't be good either.
It looks like maybe it's just a matter of waiting for Dell to come up with a fix, since it does seem as though the BIOS update is the culprit, though not necessarily I guess.

I've unistalled Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal drivers, retored 100% of CPU in Power Plan (it was 85% to avoid shut down) and runned stress test. After 30s it reach around 95°C and shut down (I set Core Temp to shut down if temperature reachs 95°C during 3 seconds).
It seems that the overheating still there...

I didn't try a stress test, but I'll try to get around to it. I suspect I'll get similar results, it probably is actually overheating.

Tomorrow I'll open it and try some clean and replace thermal paste, just to make sure that is all right.
If I get better results in stress tests I'll let you know.

I made preventive maitenance, cleaning and replacing thermal paste.
In regular use, temperature reduced about 15°C.
During stress tests and full load ocasions, the results didn't improved, and it still overheating and shutting down.
I've returned clock limits to 85%.
No solution untill now, unfortunatelly

so i guess we are supposed to just deal with it and run at reduced power. i really thought dell would get a fix for this this but i was wrong.

As I wrote earlier, a bios downgrade from 1.22.3 to 1.21.6 fixed the problem with success!

How can we get Dell to fix this? Shouldn't have to compromise performance to half a$$ fix a fan problem....

Install the older Version of the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver. no overheating since i did that. https://www.dell.com/support/home/de-at/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=jxyjd&oscode=wt64a&productcode=latitude-e5470-laptop

Not sure if it's correlation or causation...
But my BIOS upgraded this weekend to the new version. I've since cranked my processor speed back up to 100% and no overheating through half a day.
I'd be interested in hearing others' experience. Did Dell fix it?

I tried the downgrade to the noted driver. So far, while cores 0,1,3 do spike, they have not gone over the threshold. I've re-booted several times and no shutdown. This was helpful!
