Latitude D400 hard drive

The Latitude D400 that I gotten recently is not booting the version of Windows that's on the HDD, the computer does know that it has a hard drive and writes data to the disk for two seconds and just shows a solid black screen.

I do not know why it is not loading the OS.

Most likely the drive is failing -- run an extended diagnostic on it (F12 at powerup).

If it needs to be replaced, you'll need to look at the used market - this is a parallel ATA drive;  these haven't been made since the Fall of 2011.

Are you seeing any error messages such as Boot Device Not Found? Run diagnostics for the system. Restart the system and at the Dell splash screen start tapping F12. Run full diagnostics and pay special attention to the hard drive results. The D400 is getting rather old by now (around 2004 release date) and very possible that the hard drive has failed or is failing. It is possible to replace the hard drive, not a very expensive undertaking, but considering the age and the possibility that the mainboard could also be a source of problems, it might be time to replace the system.

You could try resetting the system, anything is worth a try. Disconnect/remove the battery and unplug the adapter. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then connect everything back up and try to boot the system.

The hard drive was a refurbished drive and a similar drive is in the D410 I have.

I tried the diagnostics, it can’t run the complete scan since I don’t have the resource disc.

Most hard drive manufacturers have diagnostics you can  download and make a bootable test disc or flash drive.

It wasn’t on the specific manufacturer’s website.

I am not understanding your problem. The D400 Diagnostics program is downloadable from Dell.com

This issue was fixed it was just the HDD itself, it works fine with a new drive.
