Upgrading Latitude D630: SSD, OS and RAM
Hi there!
I have a Latitude D630 that was purchased refurbished (Current specs listed below) that I'm looking to upgrade a little further (SSD, 64 bit OS and possibly more RAM) for my younger brother to use for general web browsing, Microsoft Office along with some gaming (Games of the era of course, I'm not expecting miracles with this machine!).
I currently have a Crucial MX500 250GB SSD on the way so this should make a noticeable difference in comparison to the current 80GB HDD.
I purchased the laptop with 2GB RAM which I upgraded to 4GB a few years back although it's only using 3.5GB as the system is 32 bit (hence my interest in upgrading to 64 bit OS to use the full 4GB and have the option of upgrading to 6 or 8GB in the future).
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @2.20GHz
Graphics: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family
RAM: 4GB
BIOS: A19
My main questions are:
1. Regarding OS, is it advisable to remain on Windows 7 and move to 64 bit or should I make the jump to Windows 10 64 bit?
(I understand Windows 10 is safer from a security pointy of view although I'm curious if this machine will struggle to run 64 bit Windows 10 smoothly)
2. Is it worth upgrading the RAM from 4GB to 6GB or 8GB on this machine?
I've heard mixed results on this so would like to know if anyone here has experience with this.
Thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

8 GB (2 x 4GB) ram is the max and the best choice.
So install W10 64 bit to the new SSD after upgrading to 8 GB RAM.
W11 pro is running on my D630 with the nearly the same config - im using a smaller 128 GB SSD.
Prepare a W10/11 USB stick with RUFUS and let RUFUS disable the setup checks.
Install latest W10/W11 updates afterwards and have fun with D630

Thank you for the welcome!
I'll definitely look into the CPU upgrade; if I upgraded to a T7800, would I still be limited to 6GB RAM by the chipset?
If I decide to keep the current CPU and run 6GB RAM, are there any potential performance issues or otherwise in mixing different RAM sizes of 1x 4GB and 1x 2GB?
Thank you!

If the system is going to be used to access the Internet then I would not keep Windows 7 installed. It is no longer supported and is a security risk. The D630 has a 64 bit CPU and could run Windows 10 but I would not do so unless you upgrade the system to 8GB of RAM. However this forum page has more information regarding the ability to upgrade RAM. 4GB would not give an enjoyable computing experience especially if he wants to do some gaming albeit with much older games. However the bottom line is that this is a very old system, at least 10 years or so, and I would not invest very much into upgrades. There are Latitudes that are newer and refurbished that would be had for a very inexpensive price and would offer better performance.

Welcome to the Dell Community @JFD630
W10 will work just fine.
You can upgrade your CPU to a T7800 and squeeze a little more speed out of it.

Most SSD's would be a vast improvement over an HDD.
Best regards.

Thank you for your input, this sounds like a solid plan; I'll get the SSD installed and continue the hunt for 4GB DDR2 RAM sticks!

Thank you for the advice and for the link to the other post; I think I'll make the jump to Windows 10 when I can get my hands on 6GB or preferably 8GB RAM, it's proving difficult to find 4GB DDR2 RAM at the moment!

Dears,
All possible Intel chipsets for Core2Duo T7500 (CPU of my Dell Latitude D630) list max capacity of 4Gb RAM memory. Is there any possibility to go over this limit to 6Gb / 8Gb RAM?

@petermuss Hello there,
I got the d630 as a present (2020-Covid time), at the time it had 1GB Ram, the default factory CPU, 5400rpm 80GB HDD, default Wi-Fi card 2.4GHZ, and windows ME,
I did Upgrade everything i could:
CPU T9300 2.50GHZ
BIOS A19
RAM 8GB
Wi-Fi card Intel 4965AGN 5GHZ
Disk SSD Kodak250GB
Win.10 Enterprise
All hardware bought at that time from ebay for a few dollars!
What i could not achieve was:
1. Finding a bay Ssd interface that matches exactly the cdrom interface to add an extra SSD Disk :(,
2. Win. 11 due to the hardware limitations,
If you have any ideas how to accomplish these obstacles, please reply <Private data removed from public view DELL-Admin>
Thank you in advance.

@OrionStarz
Just search Google for: “rufus windows 11 hardware bypass”. I only choose the “remove hardware requirement” and “remove online account requirement” options as I was having config errors trying to get it to do more. Hope that helps - nice upgrade!
P.S. Can I confirm what RAM you used? I’m looking at DDR2-667MHz SODIMMs, with 4Gb modules are coming out as £20/$25 each - does that sound right?
