Yes, but my preference would be for Samsung, Micron/Crucial, WD or one of the other top-tier manufacturers, not a lower-tier one.

Next to the battery you'll find the m.2 SSD - it's about 2 cm by 8 cm and yes, it is a card.

These systems do appear to support a 2.5" drive as well -- the qualifier:  if you have the larger of the two batteries (4 cell vs 3), it may block the drive bay and mean you can have only the M.2 SSD.  Even if the space is open, it requires a carrier and cable assembly to connect a 2.5" drive.

From a performance standpoint, you'll want to use a 1T M.2 2280 NVMe SSD to replace the original one.  2.5" SATA SSDs are appreciably slower.

According to the manual, yes - you can use an M.2 SATA drive.  However, for better performance, NVMe would be a better idea than SATA (and SATA m.2 support is rapidly vanishing from new systems, so if future-proofing is a goal, the added cost for NVMe is likely worth the expenditure now).
