Looks like there is a problem is BIOS firmware that needs to be addressed.

A bug fix update would be nice...

Having a buggy experience is one thing. This is a normal thing to expect from proprietary blobs & drivers. But getting no response from the dev community toward this issue is another thing. This has some meaning. Meaning is, "Dell doesn't give a ....". Fill in the gap yourself. I'll be careful while choosing my future laptop.

No update from @Anonymous ?

Nope. Nothing. As you see: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-5548-laptop/drivers

There is no BIOS update. No bug fix update what so ever. I highly doubt they will do something to fix it. This community is dead silent AFAIK.

It's not just Dell.  I have a recently purchased Intel NUC6i7KYK Mini PC that came with Win10Pro installed.  I plugged it into the HDMI port on the monitor, re-partitioned hard drive to make room for Fedora 5-23-24 32. Windows runs fine, no problem.  Fedora runs fine most of the time but out of the blue, while I'm banging away on the keyboard, the screen goes black, unresponsive.  I can't even ping the machine from another host.  It's gone.  Curiously, the system has not failed while running as a server, i.e. I'm not at the keyboard.  Does it have something to do with the video driver?

That's interesting to know. But this doesn't mean Dell Developers can't do anything about this issue by making changes in their BIOS. Does it?!

The Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming actually needs this to be mapped correctly for Optimus, otherwise the Nvidia driver and who knows what else will fail to write. It also causes problems with XHCI because DMA is pretty much busted.

Attempts to use SG tables just result in instant death of my machine, from my recent testing.

It took me years to figure out why my this one was locking up all the time.

It's not fatal on Windows, but the Intel GPU resets often. I can't pretend to fully understand DMA-BUF, but this is increasingly becoming relevant.
