Fingerprint reader reliability (Ubuntu 20.10)

Question

I've been running Ubuntu on my XPS13 9300 for almost a year and I started using the Fingerprint reader as soon as the driver was released (6 months ago?).  Unfortunately, I've found that it takes so long to log in, that I usually give up and type in my password.  I was hoping the 20.10 update would improve things, but it definitely doesn't seem like that's the case. I was able to add more finger profiles in after the update, and that process makes it seem like the hardware is working fine, but at the login screen, I keep trying all the different fingers I have programmed in, in every way possible (swipe left, swipe down, press and release, swipe fast, swipe slow, etc) and nothing has worked to log me in since the update.  What is everyone else's experience with this?  Is there any kind of hack that will at least show me that it's TRYING to read my fingerprint, but failing?  This is, by far, my biggest complaint with this laptop.

Just to update my own post, Ubuntu 21.10 really improved the usability of the fingerprint reader with this laptop!  I would say the fingerprint reader works about 80% of the time now, with the one caveat that I have to hit some letter/number key in order to trigger the password prompt.
