XPS L321X Wireless Adapter is missing

Hi everybody,

  I have a Dell XPS 13" L321X with service tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

and I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

And I also added Sputnik Kernel PPA and Sputnik Policykit PPA

but I still have a problem with wireless adapter, wireless adapter seems not present as Network Manager says "No network devices available"

I also checked the wireless adapter using the following commands

as the above commands commands shows that there is no wireless adapter

I'm also using linux-image-generic-lts-raring

I also added the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

#fix dell wifi/bluetooth:
blacklist dell_laptop

any ideas how to fix this issue ?

Does your wireless work when you first start your computer? Lots of people, myself included, seem to have a problem where the connection drops after a while, it won't reconnect and then the wireless adapter becomes unavailable. Sounds like you might have the same problem.

Yeah, it sometimes works after rebooting but actually as you said it lasts for a short while and then it became unavailable

As I said, I think it's a fairly common problem and sputnik support is... intermittent, like our wifi :-)

I really wanted sputnik to be great, but it is not. I spend more time working on workarounds than on work. I'm buying a macbook (as soon as my laptop stays connected long enough to checkout online)

eslam.husseiny: Can you provide the output of "rfkill list"? The output of dmesg would also help. Also, which BIOS version are you running?

Please note that Ubuntu was never officially supported on the L321X, only the L322X (and only if you buy the Developer Edition, though we've tried to offer best-effort help for those who didn't buy their systems with Ubuntu). However, my L321X, which I've had for 1.5 years (bought as a personal system right when it came out) has had no problems like that with the wireless. The only problem I've had with wireless on my personal L321X was with a buggy access point using a draft of the 802.11ac standard.
