If you have a factory installed system, there will be a /boot/efi partition where you can put the BIOS EXE, no need for any messing around with bootable disks.
No I booted and used the boot menu (F12 maybe?), then there was an option about updating BIOS. I chose that, then I had access to the USB that was plugged in (which happened to be the Ubuntu installation USB) so I realized that FAT32 is recognized so I just put the .exe on the USB and then chose that.

Hello!
I'm having a similarissue and would really like to update BIOS on my XPS 13 (9333) laptop.
I also tried booting into live Win XP (Hirens Boot CD) but there I get a similar error but instead Status = 305 I get Status = 9.
Thanks for help.
Best, Matic

The first answer on this article is the method that I use: http://askubuntu.com/questions/676594/flashing-bios-update-on-dell-xps-13-2015

Thanks for suggestion but sadly I don't have /boot/efi partition... Any other suggestions? :)

I just used the USB that I installed Ubuntu from. I think it was formatted to FAT so that might be why it worked.

What do you mean? You booted ubuntu live and updated BIOS from there?

I don't have (or can't find?) update BIOS option in the boot menu.
I also tried updating the BIOS with free dos live usb but the result is the same...
