xps 13 battery not charging [solved]

A few days ago the battery of the XPS9360 all of a sudden did not charge but got stuck at 71%. Running diagnostics showed that the hardware is fine. I managed to get it charging again but since the issue is being discussed on the net, posting the solution might be useful. To begin with I emphasize again that there was no fault with the hardware. The only indication was that the front LED briefly flashed white when inserting the power plug and stayed off thereafter. Two things happened shortly before, a BIOS update and my change of the charging limits. So I cannot exactly say what triggered the problem. What helped was to activate a different charging policy than the currently active one in the BIOS power management,. As soon as I switched to adaptive mode, the LED turned white, and the battery was charging again.
