xps13 mini display port hdmi audio

Can anyone confirm that getting audio over the mini display port really isn't possible on this laptop?

I have an actual Dell mini-display to HDMI converter, but don't get sound.  Just wanted to make sure it wsan't a Linux issue.

Thanks

The adapter cable needs to support it: http://www.displayport.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DP-Audio-User-Guide-v1.pdf

I am not 100% sure, but I think you need an active DP to HDMI for audio.

But you think that the graphics card and actual hardware does support the audio over the display port?  As your link states, all the parts must support it ( graphics card, adapter, output device )

Hoping maybe someone can confirm.

Thanks for the input.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure since I don't have the HDMI hardware to test, but this seems to support it with the XPS 13: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&sku=332-2271

Yeah, that's the adapter I have ... but I'm not getting sound.  That's why I'm trying to confirm if its Linux, the adapter, or simply the graphics card.  Note that in the description of the adapter, it never mentions audio support specifically.

I did check after plugging it in to see if I got an extra sound output device, but I did not see one. ( again, could be that linux isn't picking it up )

Thanks again.

I went ahead and ordered one since I could use such an adapter at home. I'll let you know what I find out.

Mine just arrived. I tested it with an Ivy Bridge XPS 13 running Debian testing/GNOME 3 (also tested on a Precision M3800). Audio works fine. You do need to change the audio output device in the sound settings, though. When I run the xrandr command from a terminal, it shows up as an HDMI device.

Ok, that gives me hope.  I'll have to try again.  I didn't run xrandr, I just checked the sound settings to see if there was a another option.  Maybe I just need a bit more setup.

thx

I realize this was answered, but I wanted to add to the answer.

Yes, the mini-display port does support audio. The key thing is that cable needs to also support audio.

I have a XPS13 running Win8.1 and it works great. I found a good cable at Monoprice for $7, part number 9474.
