linux is linux is linux. the best distro is whichever you're most comfortable with. All distro's can solve any problems. So look at
www.tuxmobil.org
and see what others have done.
For newbies, go for SuSE or redhat if you must. If you're not afraid of getting down and dirty and know how your computer works, give debian a try. the installer isn't pretty, but you'll only ever use it once....
I know this is an old topic and I was actually looking myself for an distribution for an old Dell inspiron and I am running version 12.04 of Ubuntu and now 2014 this operating ystem works very well I just recently designed a beauty website for a friend doing online marketing and I used gimp for my editing thunderbird for a mail client and the open office is a good replacement for word. I amazed that a laptop alrady older than 12 years old is still very capable and in some cases runs better than my newer dell running windows 8.
