I have tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell G3 (3590) but it freezes before I can type my user and password.
However, it works if I use "nomodeset" on grub before boot. I have tried to install oficial Nvidia drivers (440 and 395) but it doesn't work.
Is someone else having the same problem?
I've downloaded from Ubuntu oficial site. I've also tried to install pop_os 20.04 but it didn't work too.
The only distro that works well is Fedora 32 but I prefer a debian based one.
I've done a research and I've found some posts about Nvidia drivers and If I use "nomodeset" on grub it works.
I didn't found specific problems on Ubuntu 20.04 and I have it installed and working well on another laptop.
I also have tried another Nvidia drivers without success.
You mentioned yesterday that it was working fine with Fedora 32. Right?
So it could well be an issue with the Debian-base. We don't have much to offer in terms of insight on Ubuntu. But we need to corroborate that the Hardware pieces are working.
It's not a hardware problem because it works well on Fedora 32 and Windows 10.
But it doesn't work only on Debian based distros.
I still trying to solve it.
I have the same issue. Boot process freezes without nomodeset kernel cmdline option. I also have the NVIDIA driver 440 installed.
In this mode, HDMI cannot be used and sound does not work. The latter issue is common to the one described here:
