My 10v came with WinXP on it. That worked quite well, but I downloaded the Ubuntu 9.04 "netbook remix", and installed it (a 15 minute install!). It has been quite stable on my machine, and wireless internet worked without fussing. Nothing I have tried has crashed, although I don't think audio is working because of missing drivers.

I have no idea what your problem could be. What you described is certainly not normal.

I hesitate suggesting that you download Ubuntu and reinstall it, but if nothing else works, give it a type.  It is certainly not necessary to use Windows.

Did you run the Ubuntu 9.04 as a live-CD? Did that work? Download a live-CD image and transfer to a USB stick if necessary.

I downloaded the "Moblin 2.0 Live Image" for netbooks at  http://moblin.org/downloads  and put it on a USB stick.  The Moblin site gives instructions for putting the image on the USB stick.

I did not try it from a live-CD.

I have had trouble installing WinXP from a USB-powered DVD drive.  At some point in the installation process does not access the DVD for a long enough period that the DVD winds down, and when the process tries to access the DVD again, the drive will not wake up / spin up.  My wall-plug powered drive woke up when it was supposed to.
