How to boot Knoppix on Latitude D410

I have a new D410 and am trying to get knoppix 3.9 to run so I can repartition the XP drive. I want to make a dual boot using Fedora Core. Knoppix initially loads from the CD, but can not mount the CD in linux: it tries to find the CDROM in /dev/hdaXX, but the Dell CD is on the "mediabase" and (according to XP) is a USB device.

Any ideas?

Jim

It worked for me with Knoppix 3.7 on a latitude x300. From version 3.8.1 on, I get the same problem, but I haven't checked why.

You could try to use the old version of knoppix.

I tried a variety of different settings and CD versions of Knoppix, and I eventually gave up. I put Feather Linux (http://featherlinux.berlios.de/about.htm - a Knoppix remaster) on my USB thumb drive and booted the D410 from that. In my case Feather Linux had what I needed to get the job done.

I just tried booting off my USB drive to see if I forgot anything. In my case using Feather Linux 0.7.4, I had to boot using "failsafe".

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I fixed the problem.  the Ubuntu live CD detected everything.
