Howdy

try running the following as root:

# alsamixer -V capture -c `alsacard`

[note:  the ` is the action quote which is at the top left of the number row on a qwerty keyboard]

You should enter the alsamixer and CAPTURE devices volume control should show up.  You need to ensure it is set to max and on, and also ensure MIC slider is set to max and on. You can check MIC and other options with alsa by just running:

# alsamixer -c `alsacard`

But wanted to make sure at least the capture was set up properly and it can be intimidating if you aren't used to things like this.  Also ensure you are using 1.0.13 ALSA rpm or upstream as earlier versions had issues with Skype and dmix.

Hi,

I also have an Inspiron 1525, but with factory-installed Ubuntu 7.10.  I cannot get Skype to recognize any of the three microphones:  Analog, Digital, or external.  I tried both of the backport modules Dell has posted on their Wiki to solve this proiblem.  None of them work.  The one for fixing the analog or external microphone cripples the soundcard, and the one for the digital microphone doesn't seem to do anything at all.  I spent over an hour with Dell's Ubuntu support line, and following their advice wound up breaking my startup.   I spent almost three hours reinstalling everything from scratch.  I think the microphone problem is somehow related to the ALSA mixer.  I've noticed that I can't record anything with the Sound Recorder app either.  Whenever I try, it fails with an error message that my multimedia settings are not valid.  I've tried many different settings for the Sound Recorder and the ALSA mixer to no avail.

I've noticed a lot of postings about modem problems as well.  I haven't tried my modem yet, haven't needed it for anything.  I suspect it probably won't work either.  Why is Dell shipping Ubuntu PC's that don't work out of the box?

Has anyone tried Skype using a Bluetooth headset?  I ordered my machine with a built-in Bluetooth adapter and it works fine with my mouse.  I don't want to buy a headset if it might not work.

I use skype, my co-workers now use it, and a lot of folks in my office I convinced to use it ... as we also run a flavor of Gnu/Linux

I have a bluetooth headset and conference call hub as well, all working on an XPS-M1710 Gen3

The problem with sound issues are most folks don't know jack about sound ... it can be complicated

If you would like some help with your skype and mic let me know ... PVT me via email on here or to my account and we can AIM or Skype ;-) and see if we can't get it working for you
