Inspiron 530 Network/Internet Connectivity does not work

Question

Aloha,      My freind bought a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop with Ubuntu preinstalled. When he got it at home he started it and setup his user account and location, etc. After logging in for the first time he could not connect to the Internet. He called me so I looked at it in Admin - Network and it was set to roaming mode. He has an older computer with Ubuntu loaded and it was set the same. We checked both and set them exactly the same under Admin - Network. The card does not get an IP and shows no connection information. After that we tried setting it to DHCP and it gets an address of 0.0.0.0 We then tried setting it to static and put the ip address, gateway and netmask in. We could ping the cards ip but nowhere further than that. Yes, the network is plugged in it is lit green and blinking yellow. I tried a /etc/init.d/networking restart after putting it back in DHCP and got a no leases available. Being confused, we hooked back up his old system and it came right up no problems.      Today I am going to the command line and trying lshw -C network and also lsmod to see if it is getting loaded or not. The card is an Intel e1000 as far as I can see. It is integrated. I did check bios and made sure it didn't get shut off. It is not turned off. I am at my wits end. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. He does not want to return the computer and have to wait for another to come but it may come to that. Mahalo, Edward

Actually I downloaded the Dell Ubuntu 8.04.1 Restore CD and it worked when I booted as a live CD. I then did a restore from that disk and everything is ok. It seems that Dell got a bad build or something on this system. Not sure really. I am now going through the setup on the system and fixing it up. The only thing they won't have is LinDVD which you have to contact Canonical for.
