Hi Geemonet,

Did you download the CDs or are they retail-boxed versions?

If they're downloaded, I would hazard a guess that either they're a bad burn (always wise to burn the ISOs at 1x) or that the checksum is wrong.

I installed 9.1 on my 8250 with no problems. It's really hard to explain that you can't boot from either the CD or a floppy. I'm assuming you made the floppy from the cdrom.img from the first Mandrake CD.

It's possible that the CD burn didn't work correctly and made it unbootable while also causing problems with that floppy image file (if you did in fact download the CD images). Also check the md5sum of the iso files before burning to ensure that they downloaded correctly.

Speaking of which...I find it amazing that none of the common windows based CD burning programs (Nero, EasyCD) have any way to verify a CD burnt from a CD image file. Under Linux, I burn CDs from image files using cdrecord using the disk-at-once option and then compare the md5sum of the image file to 'dd if=/dev/cdrom|md5sum', and you know for sure whether or not it worked. I've yet to see a way to do that under Windows.

Hi, Thanks for your reply to my previous question. Now that I have managed to get my system to boot from the CD I have another question I hope you can help me with, (I realize it's kinda pathetic to be having so much trouble with what is supposedly to easiest of all Linux installs but please bear with me). I have a 55GB hard drive with 43GB of free space on it. I have defrag'd the drive several times and, according to the defrag report, there are no fragmented files on the disk. When I reach the partitioning section of the Linux installation and try to use the, 'Use free space on the Windows partition', option I receive a message saying that my files are too fragmented and that I need to defrag them.  As I mentioned, repeating this step doesn't seem to help. My guess is that I will have to use DiskDrake in order to complete this step. The partitioning example in the installation guide uses partitioning in order to host FTP files as an example. Is there anywhere that you know of that I can find instructions on how to partition the disk for a Windows/Linux configuration?

                                                                                     Thanks Very Much, Gary

Hey Basenji,

Thanks for the tip. Makes sense to me, so I'm gonna give it a try. I appreciate the help.

Hi Geemonet,

I find that windoze's in-built defragger doesn't work too well and generally leaves a small(er) block of un-fragmented files seperated from the main cluster.

I would, if I were you, try using "SpeedDisk" from Norton SystemWorks, or a similar tool to do a totally efficient defragmentation of the drive in question.

I just installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 and would appreciate any help on some problems I'm having. There is a CD player installed and while it seems to recognize my CD drive, that is if I click on the Play button I can hear the disk spin, if I click on the Eject button the CD ejects, etc., but I'm not getting any sound.

The system volume and application volumes are both on. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Geemonet,

There's a walkthrough here www.linuxloader.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=3 that explains how to get your sound system up-and-running under Mandrake.

Hope this helps,

Basenji_uk.
