To check the CD data integrity and md5sums, type "knoppix testcd" without quotations at the SYSLINUX bootprompt and press the enter key. Your CD image may be defective or incomplete, or your CD-burner created a defective CD due to wrong writing speed or bad media.

I have a 5150, and I also had trouble with Knoppix. You may want to try turning off SMP and/or ACPI at the boot prompt: knoppix smp=off acpi=off (IIRC).
I've used Mepis Linux (very similar to Knoppix) with great success on my 5150 -- watch out for your network card, the b44 driver doesn't like the 5150, on 2.4.x, but 2.6.x works fine.
I've since switched to Debian, and got (almost) everything working (see my thread about ACPI/Sleeping problems).
