Linux, Repair Partition, and Warranty Questions

Hello all,

I bought an Inspiron 6000 a couple months ago for school. Now, I've just started taking classes and the Computer Science curriculum focuses strongly on using Unix. I have run Linux on a desktop of mine before, so I know how to install and use it.

My questions are:
1) If I remove the repair partition, would it affect the validity of my warranty? I have an Windows OS CD, so I really do not need the repair partition and I wouldn't mind the extra almost 4GB.

2) Does installing Linux(along side Windows XP) affect my warranty or Tech Support if I call for a Windows problem?

I just want to be absolutely sure about these before I go ahead and put Linux on my laptop. I wouldn't want to risk ending up with a dead computer later on when we get busy in class and no warranty. :)

Thanks,
Chris

Adding Linux will in no way affect your warranty as it is similar to adding a software program.  Chances are if you have a windows problem Dell will not really have the ability to help you anyway.  If you do have a problem with windows, then Linux sure as heck won't be the problem, and Dell won't worry about  the Linux partition.  Which I was going to ask, are you planning a dual boot or single boot?  Removing the rescue partion won't be a problem, but you will probably not want to remove the Dell diagnostic tool, I am not sure where this resides, it may have it's own hd space as well.

Anyway if it makes you feel better, I have a dual boot on a 600m and they are always helpful with warranty work, just make sure if you call them you use window's terms!

Haha. I don't expect I'll have problems, I try to take very good care of my laptop. But hardware problems can always occur. I am planning on dual booting, Ubuntu and XP Pro. Thanks for your reply. I'll probably start later today after classes.

Thanks again

Yea I definately wouldn't worry about it then. Especially dual booting, they still have beloved windows to work with!
