Probably one of the more unique features that most distributions offer is that you can use provided repositories to install most of the programs you need. And if you use the repositories then ALL your programs are automatically updated for you by the update manager. In other operating systems, the provided update manager usually only updates the core OS and bundled applications, not everything you have installed. This improves security by making sure all of the applications you use get all security patches applied quickly without you having to update them all by hand.
