As I understand things, you guys have done a lot of work with drivers to make sure all the hardware works right with Ubuntu. Are these special drivers? How will they impact migration to Gutsy Gibbon?
Thanks for the link -- I had not encountered that issue before. It looks like a quick workaround would be to use a usb -> ps/2 mouse adaptor and use the ps/2 interface, but other than that (and the workarounds mentioned in
bugzilla.kernel.org and on
launchpad.net -- messing with interrupt routing, flashing the bios, custom-compiling kernels, etc.) I do not have a solution I can offer -- the bug does not appear to have been root caused.
There is nothing with Linux on the Dimension C521 that I am aware of that would cause the mouse to not function correctly. Have you tried using different mice or using an i386 distribution insteac of an AMD64 one?
There's an issue with the NVidia NForce 430 chipsets across 32-bit and 64-bit platforms - I understand that the problem appeared around the time the 2.6.16 kernel was released... Here's the entry on bugzilla.kernel.org: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7397
Unfortunately the rt2x00 drivers are a moving and not well supported target for Ubuntu. The rt2400 and rt2500 work well, but the USB drivers are very untested. I suggest filing a bug report on https://launchpad.net against linux-source-2.6.20, and also at http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/ so that we can get this resolved.
I have an e521, and I can report that problem exists in SuSE and other distros too with the as-shipped BIOS. I upgraded to 1.1.5, and everything works well enough now, except that most of the sound card features do not work well with ALSA. If you haven't upgraded your BIOS, that's your next step.
Just when BenC is here... i have some "funny" issue with Ubuntu and my brand new Latitude D830, the desktop (livecd) doesn't see the DVD drive and with the alternate CD it's working.
(only 1 of the many issues, but no wonder the hardware is pretty new)
Hello Mr. Hull, I'am from Berlin and I am working for the newthinking store. My store sells Hardware with OSS. We always have some trouble with drivers. So when will Dell sell Ubuntu-Systems in Germany?

We are transitioning into a couple of new systems so, the lead times are still a couple of weeks out.
