Need dial up modem for Ubuntu 7.04
I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my 5150 Inspiron and so for it working fine. A great dual boot setup.
It has a full version of openoffice.org 2.2, which I was already using on windows XP, so this is proving a very pleasant experience. My only problem is the Conexant modem is not compatible with linux. I tried the only hsf linux driver available, even though my modem numbers were not an exact match, and it did not work.
Any one know of a good retail PC card modem that will work with Ubuntu 7.04 linux? I don't have a serial port on this 5150, so the only other possibility is a usb modem.
5150 Inspiron (with the center clips cut off back panel "C" to prevent MB dammage) :)
Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 7,04
Original Phoenix Bios 0

Like you, I'm dual-booting and have reconciled myself to booting into XP to go online this summer (when only a telephone line will be available) and to hear audio (no sound working yet either in Linux).

PCI CONFIGURATION INFORMATION READ:
VENDOR ID : 8086
DEVICE ID : 24C6
SUBVENDOR ID : 14F1
SUBDEVICE ID : 5422
REVISION ID : 03
This is why I am looking for a linux capable modem.

On a previous installation (on a machine with a serial port) I used a USRobotics external 56K fax/modem in Linux and it worked perfectly. I was hoping for this result with the Bestdata USB external, but no deal.

This is limited to mainly audio chips, but there are several winmodems attached to this bus as well.

There are plenty of PCI serial modems that will work. None of them are cheap.
http://www.usr.com/education/modem4.asp has a list of their controller based serial modems. If you look around on ebay you can find a used one for around 20.00 . New they start around 60.00. You can buy a serial to usb adapter or add a serial code for less than 10.00 and use an old external like a USR 33.6 fax sportster flashed to v92 [56k} . I have 2 of these and they are outstanding. Another choice is USR's USB modem which you can find new for around 40.00 or 50.00 from USR.
Be careful buying USB modems as some are Windmodems and won't work in Linux. The one from USR will.
Winmodems which are in almost every computer since 2002 are nor really modems , they are software modems and the software is written for Windows. You can get a driver from Linuxtant for some of them for 20.00 or free if you can deall with 14.4 speed.
Dell has some Linux Modem software for cxt modems and that is why I came here to see if I can find if they have one for my dell machines.
Good luck
