No Sound

I'm running Ubuntu, Hardy 8.04. (GNOME) on a Dimension 2300. Sound has worked perfectly until last night (10/14) when I lost it while Ubuntu was running an automatic update. It was a fairly large update and I have no idea what all was updated. This happened before when I upgraded a couple of Ubutu versions back. I tried all the suggestions and only got sound back when a made a subsequent Ubuntu upgrade (I think it was the version just before 8.04. Anyway, I'll appreciate any suggestion you may have.

Have you tried the wiki:

Join the club, this has effected a number of users. The wiki article fixes it (just make sure that you specifiy the kernel 2.6.24-21-generic instead of 2.6.24-17-generic (as cited in the wiki)).

My 9365 is not recognizing the built-in audio device.  No headphone audio, no speakers, not in Linux, nothing.

However, BIOS seems to recognize the Realtek audio device.  Bios Diagnostics allows for testing the audio, but it does not play any sound.  I have replaced the speakers (twice) and still no device recognized.  Drives have been re-installed, added manually, etc, with no luck.  Bios Diag. does, however, show that the microphone is not available.  This is interesting and not something I've looked at.

I've even replaced the motherboard and still, no audio device is recognized.

I'm willing to replace the microphone, which is attached to the power/charge led (which works).

anyone have more thoughts or ideas?
