You could give http://wubi-installer.org/ a go. They were recommended by PC Plus magazine this month, as the very simplest way to try Ubuntu. I think they setup Ubuntu to run under windows, with container files, so it doesn't change anything more than an application, but I've not tried it.
Anyway...
I think the original message means you need to set a Vesa screen mode, like 1024x768 for the initial install. On my Ubuntu 7.10 disk, when you try to boot, if you hit F4 there's a VGA menu, giving a choice of video modes.
Funny isn't it, VGA is a geek name, and Ubuntu is meant to be strong for non-techie users. Now it seems to me, they should call that Screen or Video or something.

It's been a year or more since I ran ubuntu but when you install MEPIS I have to hit the f3 key when the grub screen first pops up to choose the resolution that I like to use. Should be the same in ubuntu. Otherwise you may get something too small to read. MEPIS is similar to installing ubuntu only MEPIS is a lot easier to install. If there is a 'vesa' choice when you first boot then take it. The only difference between vesa and the normal install is the video driver. Once everything is installed you will be able to get an updated driver for your vid card. It might happen automatically with ubuntu. MEPIS has to be upgraded manually but that way you are sure to get the right driver(maybe). Another reason I prefer MEPIS over ubuntu is that ubuntu doesn't have the option to log in as root. I don't like the sudo thing as well as typing su into konsole or terminal and becoming root. Ubuntu is limited when compared to MEPIS. Here's a place where you can download a copy of the latest stable release of MEPIS. Choose the 32 or 64 bit version depending on what you have. ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/released And this next link will take you to the testing versions of MEPIS if you feel like trying out the new version. I like 6.5 as it comes with beryl which is fun to play with. ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/testing I'm using 7.0 rc2 and it is very solid and stable. Just copy and paste the address into your browser.
