Hi,

    Here is the link :

http://www.opensound.com/download.cgi

I installed the driver a few days back. However, so far I am able to play only mp3s. As somebody in a linux forum pointed out, that may be due to the absence of a connection between my CD ROM and the soundcard (and hence, not a problem with the sound card). By the way, my machine is a brand new DELL 4600. So, if yours is a new machine too, you too can expect the same problem! The sound quality is not that great. There is some hissing and I am getting a low but audible beeping sound every 10 seconds or so.

The installation files get stored in /etc/lib/oss/. As part of the installation itself, there is an automatic check done to see if the speakers are working. If that works fine, I guess you are ready to listen to music (atleast mp3s).

Regards,

Sanjiv

I tried the Open Sound System drivers and found them unsatisfactory in all aspects (sound, feature set, and stability). I also don't recommend them as a solution, because they are a commercial product. For not much more than what you will pay to license this product, you can buy a replacement card.

Its a blody shame that Dell still doesnot mention that the Dell SB live has a chipset which is not linux compatable. How many buyers have to be disappointed again!!!!! They know it but do nothing!!!

For that I hate DELL!

I'm running Mandrake 9 on a Dim4550 with the accursed Dell-SB card, and like the previous poster mentioned, the OSS driver -WAS- $#@$@#$.. However, I recently tried
it again, (why I don't know...), but they must have done more work on them, as they work fine now, both under Mandrake9/SuSe8 and just now, Fedora Core 1. I last tried the OSS drivers back in June, and they were bad.. I could not play any WAV/MP3 under XMMS and do ANYTHING else on the machine w/o getting all sorts of dropouts/weird chirps/etc.. This was under Gnome or KDE..and on a 2.53Ghz/768mb machine ... This time around, they work fine.. Try 'em again (YMMV) BTW: They now have a special $15 license fee vs the previous $30+ fee.. (no, I don't work for them...)

The bad thing about the budget OSS drivers I think is

"You are entitled to FREE upgrades for OSS for only the operating system you purchased OSS for. If your operating system kernel changes and if there is a version of OSS for that kernel version, you can obtain a FREE upgrade. Free upgrades are provided for one(1) year for the date of purchase"

I think one year is to limited  I solved my issue by selling the soundcard, and buyng another one. I bougt a SB 4.1 digital. http://uk.europe.creative.com/estore/product.asp?prod=251 Not as advanced as the SB live, but enough for my 2.1 speaker system.

This may not apply to all of us, but I have the Dimension 4600 with the 3.2 and the Mobo has an onboard audio controller. You'd never guess it looking at the rear, but if there's a slightly raised little patch below the mouse and keyboard plugs , use a knife to pry it off and viola, your onboard sound card. Go into the bios and enable it. I for one pulled the Creative card out and sold it to a buddy for $25 (good ridance) and then preformed a re-install of mandrake 9.2. It loaded up the ALSA drivers for the card and now I'm sitting here listening to motzart on stereo headspeakers.
