Scanner function on E514DW multifunction printer
What is the recommended approach for using the E514DW scanner through Linux?
Dell's colour multi-function printers support scan-to-pdf on SMB shares. That option doesn't seem available on this model.
I searched for a sane-backend that might work with the device - the sane-devel mailing list doesn't have a response for this - with last question about the device posted Jan. 9th, 2016.
I tried calling support - after bouncing around a few times to find the right person, all I got was that there's an internal article stating they are aware of the problem, but are unable to offer a solution.
Has anyone managed to get the scanner working (network or USB)? Any recommendations for comparable sane-backends that might fit the bill?

Having assigned a fixed local IP-address to the E514dw, I have successfully followed advice I found at
kubuntuexperience.blogspot.ca/.../dell-mfp-e514dw.html
- Download Brother Scanner Util - support.brother.com/.../downloadend.aspx
- download.brother.com/.../brscan4-0.4.4-4.amd64.deb
Then install from the .deb.file, and run this command:
brsaneconfig4 -a name=E514dw model=MFC-L2700DW ip=x.x.x.x
Then I could immediately scan single pages, using the Simple Scan program. I have not tried multiple pages yet.
Coincidentally, the advice provided there also enabled me to print. I had tried the driver provided by Dell, but the only thing I could get printed was a "self test page" (just the self-test page, not even the "test page" - print jobs simply went to nirvana).
Simply add a Generic printer at
socket://x.x.x.x:9100
click Forward and then pick "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlmono".
While the scanner is faster than expected, the printer is slower than expected.

Hi
I just wanted to say thanks and confirm this still works. The update is I used the script download at:
https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadhowto.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2380dw_us_as&os=128&dlid=dlf006893_000&flang=4&type3=625
entering the model number MFC-L2700DW, I can now print and scan over the network with my Dell e514dw on Ubuntu 20.04.3

Hi, I also wanted to say thanks and confirm that this still works, I used the script linked by Sam above and the model MFC-L2700DW followed by brsaneconfig4 command from dsca. All works a treat in Linux Mint 20.
