Soundblaster live 5.1 driver for linux

Hi,

I installed Redhat Linux 9 and it is working fine on my DIM 4550 with the exception of the sound card. After searching the web found a driver for the soundcard soundblaster 5.1 live and it is now working as well. The only problem is the driver is a demo version. So I was wondering if anyone knows whether there are any free driver availabe for that card. Also, I'd appreciate any help with how to burn cds and watch dvds in the linux. Thanks.

I would be interesting in knowing where you found the driver for the soundblaster live 5.1.

Check this URL for the original Creative SB Live! 5.1 driver:

Check their news @ Feb 12 in the above link

Hi,

In the following link:
http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_audio&message.id=39953

it is stated that we can get our money back for the SoundBlaster live (the one before the last question).

Has someone tried it?
I have post a request to DELL, but I don't know if it will work.

Thanx,
Jesus

Ahh, man. This is a bummer. I thought that my sound card wasn't working in Linux because the chipset in the Dimension 4600s (the Intel 865PE) doesn't seem to be fully supported yet in Linux (you have to install chipset software for WinXP as well, but I guess Intel does not contribute Linux kernel patches for their chipsets). I managed to get everything but the sound card working though, and this is probably why.

I specifically bought the SB Live! card because it has such excellent Linux support (I have a real SB Live! card in my older Dell box and it works wonderfully). They should definitely make a note of this on the order page. I would have either stuck with the integrated audio or upgraded to the Audigy card. Ugh.

I may try to get the refund noted above, but it's probably not worth the trouble as you'll likely just get $20 (at least that's the upgrade cost). Please post back if you're successful with that though. Of course, it might be worth it to waste some of their time as they wasted so much of mine (I don't even know how many kernel recompiles I did this weekend switching between OSS and ALSA, etc).

Hi,

Just as a bit of extra information, I was able to get the integrated audio to work in Gentoo by compiling the i810_audio.o module (located in Sound -> Intel ICH (i8xx), SiS 7012, ... in the kernel config).  I have a Dimension 4600, which I think has an Intel D865PESO mobo (with an 865PE chipset).  So if you are totally without sound due to this issue, you might want to give the onboard audio a try.

Hi,

I am not sure whether I have the integrated sound card installed. When I opened the tower I didn't notice it, also there is no audio connectors at the back except the soundblaster card. They might have made the system with the mb sans the integrated s/card when I ordered the soundblaster card. Is this the case with everyone else or just me? What is the way to be sure that I don't have the integrated s/card? BTW has anyone had any luck with the refund? Thanks.

Well, either the audio is integrated into the motherboard or it's not. It's not something that Dell can physically remove if you choose a sound card. However, they will disable it through the BIOS and in my case they also put a plastic piece over the connectors on the back (so that you don't use them instead of your sound card connections). I'm not sure about the 4550, but I'm guessing that it does have integrated audio. Just go into your BIOS on boot and look around for a menu that says something like integrated components (it probably won't say exactly that) and see if there is an audio section (that will be currently disabled, but needs to be enabled). If that is present, then look closely at the back to see if the audio connectors are covered up. They will probably be close to your PS/2 and USB ports.

Hi

I post a query to customer care. The phoned me just a moment ago. This is all I got:

1.- My PC is less than one month old, but (as stated in point 19 of contract) I only have one week to request any change/money return.

2.- They say that this card is manufactured by Creative, therefore they have to provide me with a proper driver for linux.

The PC was tested for XP only, so the cannot assure that every piece works for other OS.

I told then that Creative states that the card is not supported by their drivers as it is a variant from DELL (opensource.creative.com).
DELL keeps saying it's Creative's problem and that they cannot give me the 30 Euro money back.

It's worthless to argue with them, and it's only for this amount, so I gave up.
At least I didn't pay for the phone call.

Jesus

PS: I might have post this message twice. Sorry about that.

For $15 I just bought a sound card and installed it and it worked fine. Did not need to remove the soundblaster but it also works with my XP setup. Need a cable from the CD to the sound card but will get that soon. The soundblaster does not have a great reputation so the $15 card should be fine.

Does anybody has got a way to install this card? This is because the last reply to this subject was last month, and maybe there are new drivers or something.

I just call the costumer service and I will return de card, unless somebody has a solution.
By the way, why do I have to pay for the shipment if they did not specify that was a different card? is like a lie does'n it?
