You may want to adjust that some, less than 3 gb for XP may leave you wanting more.

My current set up on a 30 gig hd, is right down the middle with plenty of space for both to function properly.  I think XP by itself takes like 1.5 to 2 gb.  If you don't plan to use XP much, then you may be ok.

Also after reading your post more, do you have two partition setup...it sounds like you have xp installed on the drive in the 17.2 gb section and then the rest is Dell utitlities.  Make sure that you first partition your drive, you should have some for XP and some for linux.  When you go to install linux it should show something like Windows Partition, then any free partitions.  Don't erase it until you are 100% sure.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 with an 80Gb drive.

I too have setup a dual-boot system with SUSE 9.3 and Windows XP.

In order to adjust the partitions I used the following tool:

BootIT - http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

BootIT allows you to resize your current NTFS partition without losing any data.

I simply adjusted my partition from 80Gb down to 40Gb and left 40Gb free for SUSE 9.3

I am not sure if Windows XP will run with such a small foot print.

I have been using my laptop now for 7 months and it works great.
