USB Mass Storage Installation of Linux on INSPIRON 9200

I have tried to install LINUX onto my INSPIRON 9200. I have an 200GB Maxtor USB mass storage device plugged into a USB port. Tried Knoppix, UBUNTU 5.10, SUSE,Mandriva One, Debian 3.1 but NONE   recognize the USB drive at installation time.  Only the installed IDE drive is shown in installation partitioning.

Dell boot sequence allow me to boot with USB  drive, floppy, CD/DVD drive, and internal hdd. I can plug in the USB drive & boot dircrtly into Linux or directly boot to  DOS from a floppy drive. HOW do I get Linux onto a USB mass storage drive?

I need some help with this. My desktop recognizes ide & scsi drives without any special procedures why isn't USB accessed the same way?

WHAT can I do to get to USB?

Provided that you have a running gnu/linux system which recognizes your USB drive, you can install a minimal, bootable linux system on it by hand (you'd partition it, install a base system on it, run grub-installer, etc.) - there are instructions on the net. As for a simple install, have you tried puppy linux?
