I had the same thing with installing all Mandrake/iva derived distros like Mandriva Spring 2007.1, MCNLive and PCLinuxOS 2007 TR3

Took me a week of searching the net but this worked for me:
The USB keyboard is responsive at boot in text-mode install but not in a graphical bootscreen like Grub from CS or Syslinux. In order to activate text mode install, hold down the SHIFT key while booting your Linux installation CD.

Did that and answered no when SysLinux asked "Do you want to load graphics?". I then ended up at a Syslinux commandline where I was able to type the name of the installation image; on PCLOS2007 that is "LiveCD" (case-sensitive) and I added "nousb" as bootcode. Although "nousb" prohibits boottime loading of the USB drivers, they are loaded a little while later and all USB devices work perfectly!

Not sure how this would work with SuSE, but shouldn't be far off the mark.

I now have one blazingly fast PCLOS box on an E520 - it runs rings around Vista for sure!
