X app lockup after installing SuSE 9.0 on Dimension 8300

Hello,

After successfully installing the new SuSE 9.0, I experience lockups in certain apps under X. This happens at arbitrary points, and the app returns to life after several minutes. I am seeing this in mozilla, and quite frequently in the gnome panel when using the logout button.

My Java programs always lockup when a splash screen is shown.

The system has a NVidia FX 5200 graphics adapter

anyone?

Hi Christian

I have had the same problems and after spending more than a day I found out that ACPI causes it (at least on my machine). Try disable ACPI at boot time by writing "ACPI=off" and all your problems will most likely be gone.

I can hardly understand that such a detail can have such great an impact - but true it is on my machine. Enjoy your new Linux distro!

Best regards

Christian

Hi Christian,

thanks for your reply. ACPI was the first thing the support folks suggested, but it did not do the job. I had to turn off all ipv6 support in /etc/modules.conf to get rid of the problem. Now the computer only locks up during shutdown (unregister_netdvice), which is a lot better ;-). This is a known issue - I am waiting for the fix. The whole thing seemed to have nothing to do with the hardware

Christian

Hi all,

I'm wondering what you did to install SuSE 9.0 on a Dimension 8300. I tried it with different settings and It always hang after recognizing the IDE/SATA drives.

Do you have the DIM8300 with an SATA drive, or an IDE drive?

Thanks a lot,

Robert

Hi Christian,

well now, I installed it onto an EIDE drive with acpi=off and disabled ipv6. Now it is working. It looks like, that with an SATA drive it hand in the RAID defection.

Thanks,

Robert
