XPS 13 7390 Ubuntu Screen flickering
Hello everyone,
My Dell XPS 13 7390 with the 10th generation i7 processor and Ubuntu 18.04 (Kenel 4.15.0-1065-oem) preinstalled just arrived yesterday. I have updated BIOS to the latest 1.3.1 version. The version of my xserver-xorg-video-intel is 2:2.99.917+git20171229-1 (the newest version from Ubuntu Bionic repositories).
There is a serious problem with screen flickering. It is especially apparent when a full-screen video is played. There is a hiccup every two seconds or so.
I have tried the latest Intel drivers from this PPA (version 2:2.99.917+git1912100730.f66d39~oibaf~b). Still flickers.
I found online that some people had similar issues and have solved them by going from 60.3 Hz screen refresh rate to 48.3 Hz (I don't know where the .3 comes from, those are the options in Ubuntu Display Settings). For me, flickering remains on both frequencies.
Some other people online claim that turning off the adaptive brightness from BIOS helps. It does not help in my case.
First, I would like to report this issue to Dell people responsible for Ubuntu support. What is the official way to do so?
Second, I would like to know if any community members experience this issue and what are the possible workarounds?
In conclusion, this is a deal-breaker for me. If I don't get to solve it in next week or so, I will return the laptop.

I am also getting this issue on my 7390 running openSUSE Tumbleweed. When I contacted Dell they pretty much said to run the diagnostics and when it came back as okay then there wasn't much they could do since I wasn't running Ubuntu that came pre installed.

I opened mine yesterday and it has the same problem. It's a shame because I love the product. I'm just returning it.

I read through this thread @Garisa , its shocking how they closed the issue because you 'didn't reply' when you clearly did. Looks like DELL aren't very attentive.

It looks more like a strategy. They are not even answering my direct messages. Their whole warranty team is acting crazy.
They count on people just giving up at some point.
However, I have set up an automatic reminder to this topic and I'm collecting all our interactions. It may end up in a nice novel eventually.

Can confirm no more flickering problem running 5.4.13-3-manjaro kernel.

Did do manage to do anything else to resolve this issue ?
Thank you.

Not that I remember.
I installed a few package for the intel drivers looking for a way to use the video card for playing video (so far without success, still using mpv X11 method):
[typhoe@xps13 ~]$ expac --timefmt='%F %T' '%l %n' | sort -n |grep -i -e intel -e 965
2019-12-13 10:01:58 libvdpau-va-gl-i965
2019-12-22 14:55:59 libva-intel-driver-hybrid

2019-12-29 16:09:39 intel-ucode
2020-01-03 00:34:10 xf86-video-intel-git
2020-01-17 11:02:04 intel-gmmlib
2020-01-17 11:02:04 intel-media-driver
2020-01-17 11:02:05 intel-media-sdk
2020-01-17 11:02:07 lib32-vulkan-intel
2020-01-17 11:02:19 vulkan-intel
Maybe one of these can explain it?

@typhoe Did you enable/disable any video/display/device setting ? I've installed all of these packages but still got some flickers.

Honestly, I don't remember changing anything else.
Is your bios also up to date?
[typhoe@xps13 ~]$ sudo fwupdmgr get-devices |grep -A3 Firmware
├─System Firmware:
│ Device ID: fb5523b663445df99fe178d162a221546e1974af
│ Current version: 1.1.3
│ Minimum Version: 1.1.3
I don't see anything else.

I'm having the same issue on a brand new Dell XPS 13 running the latest version of Ubuntu. I opened a ticket and Support acts like they have never heard that this is a known issue and goes through the same scripted "run this test" and now "run this test" dialog without resolving anything. A huge waste of my time. I am returning it. Sad because I wanted a Linux laptop and this is one of the few options out there with Linux pre-installed.
