linux versus Symantec PC Restore

Hi,

I got my Inspiron 1300 yesterday. I want to try linux on it, but:

- The PC did not come with an OS recovery CD
- It does not have the OS recovery utility, so I cannot burn my
own recovery CD.

The only option left is the Symantec PC Restore (ctrl-F11 at boot time).
I just want to make sure that installing linux will not erase the
PC restore image from my hard drive. Is it on a protected disk sector
of some kind?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys! And say hi to Tux from me :-)

there is an image on a seperate partition of 3gb (default on the 1300)

what you can do is just make a ghost image of your current windows setup on the laptop (if you have a windows xp cd at home you can always install it later on without problems , you can download the drivers from the dell website).

i also did not get an driver cd nor recovery cd , so i downloaded them from dell.com and burned it to a cdr before i went messing around ;)

The automated Dell PC Restore feature will become disabled by any thing that alters the MBR, and is not compatible with partitioning to add another operating system. The suggestion by aionnl is a good one. Use imaging software to capture, save, and restore images.

Forum member somms has provided a guide to image the entire drive to bootable CD/DVD. With some adjustment, this guide may also be useful for imaging individual partitions.
