Try Ubuntu 8.04 or OpenSUSE 11 for starters. Both are free and highly recommended distros.
If you like KDE, try Kubuntu. If you need help all three have excellent forums or Google you way to find answers to problems.
Good luck, I have run Linux since RedHat 5.1 back when it was about 8 floppies and you had to take your PC apart to id all your hardware ;) So much better now, Linux is the future...

also you can try to use as your friend using ;-)
there are no "best" linux distribution at all
the better way is to try some distrs via live-cd
