poweredge R510 fan control / monitoring under linux
I have a Dell PowerEdge R510 with 1 CPU and 2 sata hard drives connected to a Raid Controller.
This thing is Loud. It starts off really, really LOUD and drop down to a dull roar.. but it's still louder
than the R710 with 2 CPUs ( 16 cores ) and 6 SAS drives that I have sitting next to it.
The R510 with less hardware is 2x louder than the R710.
I've looked a tthe BIOS and tried different settings... OS Controlled, Custom with minumum
performance, minimum speed, etc but nothing I do will make this quieter...
Is there any way to do any type of fan control from linux so that I can back off some of the
fans that are installed? I tried to detach 1/2 of them but that made the system even louder...
some fail-safe thing detected failed fans and put the rest into overdrive.
I'd like to be able to power some of the fans down to 10% speed and adjust them as needed.
Thanks - jack
