1703 Fpt screen resolution/display mode--how do I increase it?

Forgive what is probably a real basic question, but I'm stumped and don't know where to turn.
I have a Dell 4600i with a 1703Fpt plug-and-play monitor.  I am getting ready to buy a larger monitor (my wife is having vision problems and I also need it for Photoshop work) but the ones I am considering all have substantially higher display modes.  The current maximum I am able to access is 1280 x 1024 even though the Intel 82865G in the computer indicates it could support up to 1920 x 1200, which would be sufficient for what I want.  (It's hidden/grayed-out and thus unavailable to me at present.)  But because it's a plug-and-play monitor, I guess there is no driver installed.
My question is basically this:  if I buy a new monitor, will it include software that will allow it to display up to 1920 x 1200?  If not, what do I need to do?  Buy a new video card?  Find and download a driver?  I'm lost!
Many, many thanks.

I can't be 100% sure on this but it depends on two thing. One is the graphics card and two is the LCD. Some cards have a high res than the display does so if you increase the res more than the display can handle then it will not fit. If your card can support the 1920 x 1200 then there should be no problem. For example I have a L1710S and its native res is 1280 x 1024 and graphics card supports upto 1680 X 1600. If I set my lcd passed the 1280 x 1024 then the screen becomes cramped like the screen is being squished inwards form all sides.
I hope this help
