If you want to get picky there are small differences within the models as well. You don't get to choose which one you get:

1704FPTt Lite-On
1704FPTs Samsung
1704FPVt Lite-On
1704FPVs Samsung

Same specs but some people have their own preference. Either way you'll have the 3 year warranty w/ Dell if you buy it from Dell and not on E-bay or something.

I use an older 1703FP at work and the 250 brightness is very bright. At home I use a week old 1704FPVt and just love it. I notice the difference in contrast ratio (500:1 vs 1000:1). I might bring it to work and compare my 1704FPVt against my work 1703FPt. The USB ports are an added bonus if you use USB flash drives (thumbdrives) or keep your computer on the ground.

How can you tell whether you've got a Samsung or Lite-on. I don't see any designation like the extra t or s on my invoice or packing slip. Nor can I see anything on the back of the monitor. I've got a 1704FPV Any ideas?

The "t" and "s" is on the model number near the serial number. You have to really look. Probably have to take it off the stand.

Thanks, I finally found it. talk about tough to see. You were right. I found the model number underneath wear the power cord plugs in. And indeed it is a 1704fps. Thanks a lot. It was tough to see even in direct light. Or I'm getting old.

Thanks, alan

If I'm not a gamer...not a single game - should I conclude then that if the 1704FPT is supposedly better for gamers, then the 104FPV is better for non-gamers?

I would like a good, sharp monitor with good resolution, a sharp, crisp screen, and is comfortable to look at for long periods of time, i.e., I want to avoid eye strain/fatigue ( I currently use a Sony 19" flat screen CRT and have been satisfied with it).

In addition to common programs in Windows XP (internet, email, Word, etc.), which LCD would best suit displaying digital photos and playback of digital files (movies from a digital camcorder) ?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. And if anybody has time, could he/she elaborate on the distinction of the 500:1 to 1000:1 contrast? What would be the difference in terms of visual appearance? Thanks in advance. Take care.
