1704FPV and 1704FPT

Hello,

Can someone explain the difference betwen the UltraSharp 1704FPV LCD monitor and the 1704 FPT LCD monitor? There seems to be a substantial difference in price on the Dell site.

Thanks,
Don

Thanks!  I did get some info:

* 1704FPT has response time of 12ms and 1704FPV has response time of 25ms.
* 1704FPT has contrast ratio of 500:1 and 1704FPV has contrast ratio of 1000:1
and
* 1704FPT has brightness of 300 and 1704FPV has brightness of 280.

That contrast difference seems substantial.

Looking at the specs for the two, the biggest difference seems to be the fact that the 1704FPV is a 25ms response time monitor and the 1704FPT is 12ms.

If you are going to use the monitor for gaming, you should worry more about response time. Both that and contrast are important, but a 'slow' response time is going to cause more problems if you play games with a lot of action or (in general) if there is a lot  of motion on the screen.

Thanks, Craig.  On the other hand, one user has stated:

"This is an MVA-type display, one of the few left in 17 inch. The color accuracy is great, the viewing angle very healthy, and this is what you need in terms of photo editing and graphics to be competitive with a CRT monitor. And the text is great.

Unfortunately almost all the 17 inch MVA displays have been discontinued and replaced with faster-refreshing but less color-accurate TN displays that are also poor on viewing angles. The faster refresh from TN technology is great for gamers but does not do anyone else any good. Overall, the change to TN in 17 inch monitors forces people with graphics needs to go to more expensive larger displays that still standardize on MVA or similar technology."

Is that in reference to one model in particular or both of the 1704s?

Biggest thing to me that would drive a decision like this would be - what is the primary use of the computer the monitor will be used with? Games? Photo editing? Email and web browsing? There are pros and cons to LCD versus CRT, 17 inch compared to 19 or 20 inch monitors, widescreeen versus a non-widesreen, etc - decisions that would need to be driven by the primary use. That and your wallets threshold of pain, of course.

Me personally, I'd worry more about 'color accuracy' (which could mean 6bit versus 8bit or 16.2 million colors versus 16.7 million colors, I guess) if I was doing professional photo editing or graphic artist work. For gaming, refresh and contrast should be right up there. YMMV. :smileywink:
