2405FPW - PIP Using DVI and DB15

I recently purchased a 2405fpw, the screen in phenominal for computer work. Now, on to the problem ....

I wanted to be able to have the main input as DVI and the PIP input as DB15 from another computer. Is this possible ?

While using the PIP menu or the OSD menu I noticed that while i'm on DVI or DB15 i have the choice of Svideo, composite or RGB as a pip...the other options (DVI and DB15) appear, but they are grayed out. In addition i can access the Swap , PIP Size, Position or Advanced menu options. This seems quite strange to me.

In addition, if i choose (for example) Svideo as my primary video source, then the DVI and DB15 choice become available (but rgb and composite get disabled) along with all the other menu options.

Why can i swap when Svideo is my source, but not when dvi is my source? why can't i set the size of the pip when i'm on dvi as my main source ?

Anyone else having problems like this ?

Jesse,

Thank you for the reply. I had already looked at the documentation. Looking at the section titled "PIP/PBP Settings” There is an image (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2005FPW/GRAPHICS/contro9.gif) this image shows all sources being available. As i described in my first post, certain inputs are disabled on the menu. The documentation seems to indicate that all inputs should be available.

But, if i look at some of your marketing material
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/global/products/monitors/topics/en/monitor_feature?c=us&cs=RC956904&l=en&s=hied (particularly footnote 4) it seems to indicate that you can view pc and video input, not pc and pc.

To summarize, the documentation, the marketing material and what i am experiencing on my OSD menu all contradict each other. I'm trying to sort if either of the two Dell informational sources are accurate, and if so is my monitor malfunctioning.

Regards,
-eric

Well, I can confirm the no PIP PBP DVI and DB15. However I am able to switch between the inputs with the moniter button. It's one day out the box and it's displeasing to read PIP/PBP and xyz inputs in the marketing and then receive a patchwork of those features. Now that I am reading about the non scaling issues for component/composite inputs... fairly sure that S-Video does not reach 1080i, I am beginning to question what I thought was a really nice buy in price for an 24" 1080 HD moniter. *sniff if only had HDMI*
And of course I found this out when I was looking for a pat answer on why the Matrix still has bars (ouch the wife is clearly going to miss the logic here as both tv and dvds could end up with black bars) ohh yes answer= Matrix 16:9 (or closer to that) and 2405= 16:10. Although I still don't know why it's so grainy at native res. seems much better at lower res
I have 0 svideo nor component cables and certainly no high def satellite box (and no time yet to hook up composite or post this...lol). So it's still to early to commit. The moniter on preliminary inspection is drool worthy although gamma correction will save your retinas as the OSD briteness is not even close to sufficent. The next few days I hope I can get some more testing in and maybe read/post a little more.

!!off topic!!! With the 8400 dim We received a dual tuner that has only one coax in, two S video ins and two mic ins that require (at least in the picture) unsupplied (although it mentions them as supplied in the manual) RCA to mic in.
P.S. Everyone oops every once in a while and I concur that every other thread I've read Jesse's been excellent, but I couldn't find anything in the 2005 man that was directed towards these topics

I am going on 7 hours of transfers, bouncing and all around incompetance with Dell Customer Service over this monitor.

I have a "simple" question that I am praying someone on this forum can answer...

Is there any way, with any configuration or video cards, to connect 2 Dell Dimension Desktop towers to the 2405FPW and get the PIP or PBP features to function?

As previously stated and proven, it is not possible to accomplish this by using one tower with DVi and the other with D-sub. Yes, both towers will output video and both can be toggled by pushing the input button on the bezel of the monitor but, the ability to put those two images side by side or PIP is not possible. How on earth can Dell sell a monitor, advertise it as having PIP and PBP capabilities and not have it be functionional with 2 desktop computers from the same manufacturer.

If the only way to take advantage of these features is by using a DVD player or a cable box then it is essentially useless.

Please tell me I am doing something wrong or there is some "get around" that can accomplish my PIP or PBP issue with 2 desktop computers.

Thanks a WHOLE lot!

So you've tried turning on POP with DVI as your primary source and then swapping and swtiching the input to VGA?

That stinks, if it's greyed out that means the monitor simply does not support simultaneous viewing of VGA and DVI, perhaps they both use the same video processor and therefore cannot share. :smileysad:

I have tried it both ways. Using the DVI as the main and truing to POP in the Dsub and using the Dsub and trying to POP in the DVI..same result: The inputs are greyed out and incapable of being selected. The only thing that can be selected are Svideo, component and composite.

I was able to get the same card to output Svideo and DVI simultaneoulsy and put a PIP or PBP of the same image in the screen from the same desktop. Essentially a waste but, at least I know the feature works and the monitor isnt defective.
