2405FPW -- buzzing noise when on?
Hey fellow Dell customers,
I just got the 2405FPW monitor this past weekend. A great monitor on all counts but one thing. When the monitor is on, I hear this slight buzzing noise from the rear of the monitor. It's louder where the power plug is, so I have a feeling it has to do with the integrated power supply.
Can you guys test your 2405FPW panels to see if it also does this buzzing thing? The easiest way to do it is to simply power on your monitor with no inputs and let it do its self-test color-bar thing. Stick your head behind the monitor on the right side and if you hear a buzzing noise - much like a flourescent light's ballast buzz - please let me know.
...trying to figure out if it's worth an exchange or if all units are going to buzz like this!

whacking,
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.
Monitors will make noise. The fact that yours is making noise doesn't automatically mean there's something wrong. This might sound a little strange but one thing you can try is going to an electronic store and ask a sales rep to let you listen to one and see if yours and see how it compares to yours.
I would recommend that you do this as soon as possible. The reason is that you have 21 days to return it for a new exchange or a full refund if you feel the noise is just not worth it. There are users who would rather have a quiet monitor even if the display is not as good. That's a decision you would have to make. I just want to make sure you act quickly so you don't get stuck with something you don't like.

But thanks for the suggestion.
Has anyone else experienced anything?

Yes I do have very high pitched noise coming from the unit, it gets louder the longer the monitor is up and running. It is extremely annoying. It's a very high pitched cycle that drills into my ears and drives me crazy.

whacking,
What all do you have connected to the 2405 fp? When does it start making the noise? Any information that you can provide will help in resolving the issue with the LCD.

Jesse,
My setup is as follows and I hear the buzzing noise also right when the backlighting is on.
APC Back-UPS RS 800 AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) - (Everything hooked up to this)
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Video Card
Other components incase you wanted to know but i do not feel that these would affect the noise from the monitor.
Asus P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz CPU 512MB Ram
512mb Corsair RAM
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Plextor PX-712A
Altec Lansing MX5021 THX Speakers

I'm running it from an Asus 9600SE videocard over DVI.
Any fix other than exchange? Does it go away?

Jesse:
My monitor had been connected DVI to an ATI Radeon 9600 on an Apple G5 Dual 2Ghz. Someone on the group said they swapped out the power-cable that came with the monior. I tried this but it didn't work. My whine never stopped so I exchanged mine. Haven't received the exchange but if this isn't a "known issue" it could be a problem on my new monitor.

If you have your panel set to go into powersave mode so that it doesn't stay on for that long, and you don't use it for more than an hour in a sitting, they you may not notice it.
So my question for other 2405FPW owners is, does anyone have a 2405FPW that, after being on for two hours or more, does not have this whine? If so, I'll exchange and try another.
What a drag. Its an awesome panel that seems high quality in all other respects, but this is a deal breaker for me (and most others I would think).

I've had mine on continuously for five hours yesterday and again today. There have been no noises from the monitor. I have no dead pixels or back light issues. I did have to set the brightness level to 30, to prevent from going blind, and the monitor does not sit level on the stand. I corrected that by placing a couple of half inch felt pieces under the right side of the stand. My monitor has an April, 2005 build date.
