DVI to VGA Adapter Question/Issue

My new 8300 graphic board has a DVI and a VGA port and both my existing Dell monitors have DVI plugs.

Last night I bought a DVI to VGA adapter and the monitor plugged into the VGA port is recognized (the 8300 recognizes what model it is) but I can't get a signal on the monitor at any resolution.  There is a small note on the adapter packaging that notes that ik works for DVI-A (analog) and DVI-I (analog and digital) but not DVI-D cables.

Do I need to get a different DVI to VGA adapter, or is the one I bought possibly defective, or is there something else I should be looking for? (Both monitors work fine - I tried both and the issue seems to be when using the adapter to get to the VGA port).

thanks!

What specific Dell monitor models? Do the monitors have a VGA port? If yes, why not use this setup =
video card DVI -->Dell DVI to DVI cable --> 1st monitor DVI
video card VGA --> Dell VGA to VGA cable --> 2nd monitor VGA
