Dell ST2410 hdmi issues

I recently got the new xps 8100 with the ST2410 monitor, and i bought a hdmi cable to connect the cpu and monitor. Problem is, the monitor doesnt seem to be getting any signal from the cpu when i power them up.

I am only using one connection, the hdmi cable. selected hdmi output in display settings, and i still have the same issue. Whereas when I used the supplied VGA cable, everything works fine. I noticed other people are having the same problem with the HDMI cable, so I was just wondering if there  is a solution.

You cannot connect both a dvi cable and hdmi. It won't work. If you use the hdmi you have to select the hdmi output in Display Settings. If you have a DVI connection, use that instead. It's the same quality picture and better for monitors. HDMI is better used on an HDTV. On a computer video to monitor connection the hdmi cable only send video, no sound and cannot be used with another video connection. HDMI also has digital copy protection that might cause problems.

I just bought a 23 in monitor with the recommended HDMI cable to go with it.  I have successfully connected the regular VGA cable to the CPU because I cannot find a port on the back of the CPU that accommodates the HDMI plug.  How did you handle this  ?

thanks

I have an XPS 9000 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 video card connecting to an ST4210 monitor.  The video card has 2 DVI outputs.  I had the monitor connected with a VGA adapter and everything worked fine.  I bought a HDMI cable and used the HDMI-DVI adapter to plug into the video card and now the monitor won't recognise the HDMI connection on start up or after the computer has been in sleep mode.

I have no idea why it isn't working.  It is VERY frustrating.  I have to play with the display input selectors on the monitor a few times and then change the adapter from one DVI output to the other and then it works.  This is not a good way to get this to work.

Video wise, HDMI and DVI are the same. The only difference is HDMI also sending audio. In your case, your video card DVI is not sending audio, so why would you use a DVI to HDMI converter to HDMI on the ST2410? Why not go video card DVI to ST2410 DVI?

One reason might be to get any 720p resolutions. Which leads me to my own question:

Using a DVI cable, I can't get this monitor to run 1280x720, which seems odd, since that is a HD resolution that matches the panel aspect ratio.

If I buy an HDMI cable, and use that, would it allow me to run that resolution?
