I am currently using the Dual Link DVI Cables with white connectors that came with the monitors. However, I seem to be experiencing a similar issue to the people using the included Display Port cables from this thread en.community.dell.com/.../19339056.aspx
Could it be that the Dell supplied Dual Link DVI cables are faulty and are causing me to lose video signal?
I have a Dell 2408WFP and occasionally it goes black as if it went into sleep mode. It has been doing that since I acquired the monitor three years ago but it seems as if it is doing it more frequently lately. Nine times out of ten it comes back on it's own though I do need to shut the monitor off and turn it back on for it to come back for those times it doesn't come back on it's own. This has happened irrespective of the model ATI or nVidia card or DVI cable I use. I am very leery of buying another Dell monitor because of this. Does anyone make a comparable or better monitor?
I can not yet be sure yet, but after the installation of the latest MS Update, my issues with the Display port seem to have disappeared. This "seemed" to have happen one other time, but making sure you accept the update "might" help or solve the problem. No guarantee and I could be speaking too soon.
While my own problem is somewhat different than yours, it would not surprise me if they all have the same root cause. Some have had issues with more than the display port, but my issue has been occassional loss of video signal, but onoly using the display port. Sometimes this happens several times a minute and other times maybe a few times a hour. On the flip side, several have received replacement monitors and the problem would go away.
All I can say is my computer has run all day today, without the issue popping back up after several hours. I am going to let them replace the monitor anyway, because it does run way too hot, the top of the monitor is almost hot enough to burn your hand.

I believe from taking time to research further, the issue is mainly power save mode. I thought a Win 7 update fixed it, but it appeared that way because I had turned the monitor clear off. When the problem reappeared, it had been in power save mode. Turning the monitor off a few seconds and then back on, seems to clear up the issue. This seems consistent with what several are reporting.
My question would be is the need a firmware upgrade or monitor replacement with a updated port. My next question would be is early V1.2 displayport technology at the route of the problem? (my understanding is AMD cards had their own version of V1.2 displayport technology in cards before approval of the standard)
I don't know if this is the case here but i hate when any manufacturers use a draft version of a standard and doesn't specifically indicate this in their specs. If a draft standard is used, it should be marked such, like "802.11n (draft)" or something similar.
With routers," 802.11n (draft)" was actually mentioned in the specifications of the first 802.11n routers to market. When the standard was ratified, all routers stated "802.11n" in their specification and as such were assumed to comply with the ratified standard (maybe a wrong assumption but the standards body is the one to resolve such incorrect use of their markings). In any case i purposely stayed away from "802.11n (draft)" routers to ensure that any product i bought would inter-operates correctly with other manufacturers "802.11n" products. I didn't want an illegitimate child router.
If either a monitor or graphics is using DP v1.2 draft standard, then that may indeed result in some issues. But how does one know if a monitor or graphics card manufacturer doesn't clearly specifying what standards their products comply with? Is it for users to perform some tests or subsets of tests to verify how they comply to DP v1.2?
So the question i hope Dell can answer is: For the U2711, what standards (draft or ratified) is used for each of the various input connections (VGA, DP, HDMI) at the various revisions of this product? What else did each revision bring - a change log would be great?
Only them can we start to check some underlying trends and come to a real conclusion but again we doing Dells testing (of sorts)!
(the other question is: if draft standards were used, can these products be updated to the ratified standard with a firmware flash or is part of the draft standard implemented in hardware - but in any case, Dell doesn't seem to release firmware updates for monitors)
From everything I can see this is just some type of issue with power save, why it affects the display port more than other ports is a good question. The work around for me is prevent the monitor from going into power save mode or if it does, then turning the monitor off and waiting a few seconds to turn it back on works. I would try that if you have the occassional black screen (video loss) problem.
