Displayport to Xbox

Hi,

I am trying to connect my Dell 3008wfp Displayport to Xbox using an HDMI adapter but every time I do this the monitor enters power safe mode. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Thanks

Pilau,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

What Input Source are you  choosing in the monitor OSD menu? It should be DP (Display Port) but you might try switching it to HDMI and retest.

Hi Jesse

Thanks for the suggestion but I already have a PS3 connected through the HDMI port which is why I am trying to connect through the DisplayPort, I am trying to switch between the two without having to move HDMI cable each time as I often need to capture footage as part of my job and switch between the two fairly regularly.

I have also tried an HDMI splitter but I find there is a bit of quality loss and occasional noise which is obviously not ideal for capturing purposes!

Pilau,

I don't know of any other way to get this going for you. You can search in Google to see if anyone may know how to get this working.

What adapter are you using? (manufacturer and model number)

I have tried an HDMI - DisplayPort lead and this adapter:

Neet® - DisplayPort to HDMI adapter / converter (for Dell / PC / Video Card / Monitor etc.) - Full HD Video and Audio

Unfortunately those will not work. They are intended to work with special DisplayPort outputs known as DP++. These outputs are capable of transmitting an HDMI signal. The adapter does not modify the signal, it simply changes the connector so that the HDMI signal can be passed to HDMI devices. The DisplayPort input on your monitor (as far as I know) is not capable of accepting anything other than a DisplayPort signal. Because the adapter you are using does not do any signal conversion, the monitor is receiving an HDMI signal from a DisplayPort cable and it is unable to display it because it is not the DisplayPort signal it expected.

An active adapter like this (cheaper here) that converts the signal and the connector should work, although I recommend contacting StarTech before purchasing it to verify this.

Another option is to use one of the DVI ports on the monitor, which can be done using a cheap HDMI to DVI converter because the signals are compatible. DVI does not support audio so you will need to either buy an adapter that converts HDMI to DVI and outputs the audio on a separate cable or have the Xbox output audio separately. The PS3 apparently has better support for using HDMI and analog or S/PDIF audio simultaneously, so you should probably connect that using DVI and connect the Xbox using HDMI.

Thanks for such a detailed answer, I've been looking for weeks for a solution! I've actually got a HDMI to DVI converter but it's already being used, the DisplayPort is my only remaining port.

I'll contact StarTech but if they say it won't work - do you think an HDMI splitter would suffice?

Hi,

Before purchase of my new Dell U2312hm i did little research about compatibility of connecting xbox with monitor over displayport. And i found this thread where people had same problem as you: forums.techarena.in/.../1399354.htm

Possible solution as one user claims:

Quote: I found out a way to this and that is you need the HDMI cable because it's the Display Port to HDMI not HDMI to Display Port. So it’s very necessary to get a proper HDMI cable first. I think that you can just go for a type B HDMI cable which can be very useful to you. This is a special type of cable that can be used to fix this issue. Suppose that if you want to play a XBOX 360 or PS3 on a monitor then you need to have such type cables because they are very helpful.

I don't know if this work's or not, because my xbox is connect over DVI.

I'm confident that the StarTech adapter will work. If StarTech says otherwise, an HDMI splitter should also meet your needs, although I'm not sure why you experienced problems with that before. Using an HDMI splitter to share the monitor's HDMI input should work without any quality loss based on my understanding of them, but I've never used one so I could be wrong. You should post on AVSForum.com to get help with that, probably in the HDMI section. The users there are very knowledgeable about things like this. The Dell employees on this forum aren't very good at helping users with unusual needs or problems.

I looked at the link that lordbibi posted, but the solution provided is not possible. While HDMI type B is defined in the specification, it isn't actually used anywhere, so it isn't possible to buy a cable or adapter

Just out of curiosity, what capture hardware do you use?

I bought the StarTech adapter as their technical support team told me to refer to the manual online rather than actually answering my question! Anyway the manual said it works with games consoles and carries audio - however no audio came through on either the Xbox OR PS3 and I tried a variety of HDMI cables to be sure. Also the PS3 had loads of interference every couple of seconds - which is the same problem I had with the HDMI splitter in the first place!

I am starting to think I will be stuck with switching the leads manually...

Btw I use Snapshot for capturing

That was helpful of them. :emotion-1: The adapter only supports stereo audio, so you'll need to make sure that the Xbox is configured properly. Follow the instructions here and select 'Digital Stereo'. According to this the monitor does support DisplayPort audio, but no one seems to have been able to get it to work, so it's completely possible that it doesn't or that the support is broken or incomplete.

Dell has a history of poor DisplayPort implementations and other problems with their monitors. I had a 2408WFP that would go black for a few seconds occasionally as though the DVI cable had been disconnected briefly. I didn't do anything about it, but I eventually had the monitor replaced when purple lines started appearing. They didn't have any more 2408s, and after repeatedly sending me U2410s (which do not have S-Video, unlike the 2408), they upgraded me to a U2711. The U2711 has problems waking from sleep when using DisplayPort, and the scaler doesn't work properly at some resolutions, but it does have working DisplayPort audio, which I use daily with my Mac mini. Based on some Internet research and the monitors being in the same series (with identical menu options regarding DisplayPort audio), I assume that the U3011 also has functioning audio support. The U3011 also has two HDMI ports, which would offer another solution to your problem.

Because of Dell's unwillingness to provide proper support for their monitors (as evidenced by the forum posts about DisplayPort audio on the 3008WFP), you should call technical support and complain until they send you a U3011. Be polite and persistent when you call, and after they send you the wrong monitor four or five times, you should end up with what you want. There are some differences between the 3008 and U3011, so you should investigate those to ensure that it will meet your needs. This site has useful reviews. Also, search online for discussions (like this thread) to find out what problems the U3011 has (I'm sure something doesn't work properly).

If your monitor's warranty has expired, you could sell your current monitor and upgrade. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any monitors with the same resolution that offer as many inputs as Dell's, so you probably don't have any options other than the models I already mentioned.

I'm not sure why the PS3 isn't working properly with any splitters or adapters, but I suspect the issue is related to the PS3. Other people seem to have had similar problems connecting them to various equipment. Try changing the resolution to 720p. It would be helpful if you record a video of the problem for me to see.
