E173FP Monitor Problems

Received new E173FP last evening with a Dimension 4700 system.  Got system up and running and about a couple of hours, the monitor decides to go black on the lower 3/4 of the screen.  Top 1/4 is viewable.  I power off the monitor for a few minutes then power back on.  Screen is back to normal for several more minutes then will go back to lower 3/4 black, top 1/4 okay.  While the problem is being experienced, I powered off the monitor and attached a different one to the PC to rule out the video card.  Picture on different monitor okay.  Anyone have any ideas?  Have not run the self-test yet.  Will do that this evening.

C150L,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are some things to try and resolve the issue with the monitor.

Perform monitor reset on "All Settings"

If that does not work try the monitor self-test below to see if the problem persist in this area. You can also check to see if the problem persist in "safe mode" as well.

Monitor Specific Troubleshooting

Self-Test Feature Check (STFC)

Your monitor provides a self-test feature that allows you to check if your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and computer are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps:

  1. Turn off both your computer and the monitor.
  2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer. To ensure proper Self-Test operation, remove Analog (blue connector) cable from the back of computer.
  3. Turn on the monitor.

The floating 'Dell - self-test Feature Check' dialog box should appear on-screen (against a black background) if the monitor cannot sense a video signal and is working correctly. While in self-test mode, the power LED remains green and the self-test pattern will scroll through the screen continually.

  1. This box also appears during normal system operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
  2. Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable; then turn on both your computer and the monitor.

If your monitor screen remains blank after you use the previous procedure, check your video controller and computer system; your monitor is functioning properly.

Thanks for your input.  Ran the self test last evening and the monitor passed.  Reconnected the video cable to the monitor and it has ran overnight with no problems.  My only conclusion that I can logically arrive at at this time is that the when the monitor was packed up, the video cable was not securely attached.  My fault for not checking when setting up the system.
