E173FPc Monitor Poor Resolution/Distortion

I have a Dell Model E173FPc monitor
040568-11 October 2004

My brand new monitor has been working fine since I set it up after Christmas; however, I came home the night before last and it's just a mess now. It's dark and fuzzy, hard to see, it is flashing with squiggly lines and there are gray lines horizontally across my screen. :smileysad: I've disconnected it from the computer (with everything turned off) and turned on just the monitor. The colored box came up and looked fine, but when I reconnected, everything was the same as before. I've tried to reinstall the monitor -- that didn't work. I've downloaded the most recent driver and installed it -- that didn't help. I don't know what else to try. Please help:smileysurprised:

I've searched everywhere on-line to no avail. I've tried calling and submitting email help, but for some reason the "Service Tag" is not right on my monitor. :smileysad: I'm really disappointed with the service from Dell on this. :smileymad: I expected much better and thought it would be a breeze to fix it because it's a Dell. Not -- at least, not so far. I've been on hold for almost an hour with customer service. Now I'm here.:smileysurprised:

I would so much appreciate any help.:smileyvery-happy:

tittoanni,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are some things to try and resolve the issue with the monitor.

  • Push 'Auto adjust' button
  • Adjust 'Phase' and 'Clock' controls via OSD
  • Eliminate video extension cables
  • Perform monitor reset
  • Lower video resolution or increase font size
  • Perform monitor reset
  • Push 'Auto Adjust' button
  • Adjust 'Phase' and 'Clock' controls via OSD
  • Perform monitor self-test feature check and determine if these lines are also in self-test mode
  • Check for bent or broken pins on the D-sub cable.

Try removing and reinstalling the video card drivers into the system. If you need information on installing video card drivers look in the Dimension video card forum.

I have a similar problem with my 19" (E193FPP) that has developed color distortion that showed up out of the blue after a couple of months with no problems. The screen has the effect of an analog TV with bad reception, fuzzy lines, colors bleeding together and what looks like a terribly low refresh rate. I tried all the usual suspects, powering everything down, re-installing the video driver and reseting the monitor to factory defaults to no avail. When I disconnect the video cable from the computer and restart the monitor on its own, a "Self Test Feature Check" box floats around the screen with a horizontal stripe of distortion behind it. The text in the box is also fuzzy and the text colors distorted. I haven't tried the monitor on another computer yet but that's the only other thing I can think of besides shipping it back.
