Full HD 1080p on Dell 1920x1200 display such as 2405FPW or 2005FPW

Dear sir,

As you know the HD top notch standard is 1080p : 1920 x 1080 resolution

If you try to send this resolution to a Dell 2005 or 2405 FPW display it won't display correctly.
Reason is that EDID is missing those resolution right ?

I have read the forums and find out that many EDID questions are left unanswered.
However i do believe internet and the world community have enough skills to work out a solution without having you Dell Guys busy on support.

If you could just provide the timing and frequency that are needed to support 1920x1080 we could work out a solution for those monitors.

If you feel kind enough to provide an updated EDID file for those displays supporting the world Full HD standard 1080p please do so !

Otherwise please supply at least the timing and frequency so we can use EDID software to add the world Full HD standard on our monitors !!!!

Please !!

I think many owners/buyers of 1920x1200 display are expecting their displays to support any LOWER resolution ! Especially if that lower resolution is a WORLD standard right ?

side2005fpw,

Interesting question. I have sent it up the line to the engineers. But, know that even if you could edit the EDID, that would be voiding the warranty. Just be aware of that.

Hi Chris

Thanx for the reply

Of course this will void warranty i'm aware of this and don't care as the monitor is not under warranty anymore, and i prefer finding a solution to get Full HD on those.

I have 2 questions, if by chance any technical guys from your crew could answer them:

- Will it work if we dump the 2407 EDID and use the 1080p modeline for that EDID to modify the 2005 and 2405 EDID ?

- I have seen your display 2405 and 2005fpw have firmware, is there no firmware update planned to support the world standard 1080p ?

Stay assured that i perfectly understand that those display are not HDCP neither. (there is solution for this, the only problem right now is display like 2405 and 2005 who are 1920x1200 but cannot display 1920x1080, it's a bit shame isn't it ?)

* No idea. We have never done this.

* No.

Hi Chris,

No offence, but it looks like the exact same answer i'm getting when i ask anyone who have no clue about what we are talking about in any shops at any corners ;)

Anyway...
I can understand Dell does not care of things they sold previously, in nowaday world everybody is in the race for the first place, so you have probably too much work for upcoming hardware.

Anyway, i would really appreciate if you can get Timing and Frequency for 1920x1080.
If you cannot, just say it, and we will just try what we can to bring a solution for us and for YOUR customers !

It's sad cause we really want to help finding a solution

* The 2005FPW cannot do anything above 1680 x 1050, EDID edited or not.
* The 2405FPW might take a 1920x1080 signal, but the display will be stretched slightly to fit the 1920x1200 screen. The 2407WFP had the same issue and we fixed it with a bios update, but only because the 2407WFP is still selling as new.

I have read the forums and find out that many EDID questions are left unanswered.
* Correct. This is by design and intent.

If you could just provide the timing and frequency that are needed to support 1920x1080 we could work out a solution for those monitors.
* I am not allowed to do this.

If you feel kind enough to provide an updated EDID file for those displays supporting the world Full HD standard 1080p please do so!
* PG/engineering said no.

* I disagree. I think most consumers look at the specifications before they purchase the item and accept them:

This kind of support is very disappointing. To update the 2407 simply because it is still on sale is not good enough. Technical support should last throughout a product's life. Considering how well the 2405 sold, there must be thousands of people looking to display the universal HD standard of 1920x1080. It's not like it's a tough fix - we're not requesting HDCP compliance. An Xbox 360 can already display 1:1 1920x1080 via VGA on the 2405, we just want it to be accepted 100% through DVI and VGA, with the exception of HDCP sources. This is a much needed techinical update for any 24" monitor. Please support your products properly.

I must agree, I find this product support extremely disappointing.  It is understandable that Dell may not be able to offer an HDCP update for the 2405, as it is a feature of their newer product, the 2407.  However, I have personally tested the 1920x1080 input resolution on my 2405, and find that Chris's response is incorrect.  The 1920x1080 input is incorrectly stretched horizontally, and not vertically when the correct Image Settings > Scaling OSD menu is set to either "1:1" or "Aspect".  A slight vertical stretch, as produced by the "Fill" option would be acceptable, but this sort of behavior by the display cannot be considered anything other than a severe bug in the display.  So, I'm not asking for a new feature for free, I'm just asking that Dell fix a bug in their firmware, on a product I paid something like $1000 for.  If they choose not to, I consider it an indication of poor practices by the company, and will not consider purchasing any more of their products.

And I would like the new capabilities of the 2009 version of my 2006 vehicle in my 2006 vehicle, but Dodge doesn't seem to want to do this either (I'd like to put the new radio (with a 20GB or so harddrive) in my 2006 vehicle and still use the steering wheel controls).

Odd that companies are not big on adding features to a end-of-(sales)life piece of hardware.

Now back to reality.

I love my 2405. I knew going in it was 1920x1200 and didn't have HDCP support (very few LCD monitors did back when I bought mine). The newer models added support for HDCP, but sacrificed in other areas like input lag and LCD panel quality.

If you specifically want 1920x1080, look into a 2408 or 2409. A 20" couldn't do this anyway as it doesn't have enough physical pixels in the first place. The 1x1 ration offering (preventing scaling) would be nice, but when you bought the 2405 it wasn't a secret about the resolution capabilities.

Asking for information about how to program/tie into the EDID is getting close to asking a company to provide source code. Some do this (e.g. Red Hat), but most don't as it's protected by copyright and someone spent a lot of time making it.
